I still love the movie, i mean just look at that cast. Rumor has it that the role was originally written for an older man, but Del Toro was so impressive he got the role. The movie keeps making you question it, presenting Soze as such a larger-than-life character that the stories couldn't possibly be true. I wanted to touch on this in my footnote but didn't say it-- audiences definitely focus too much on plot and think less thematically. How a character is built and relationships amongst the thieves are presented make us feel sympathy (even his walking impediment and shy attitude serves this purpose). The Usual Suspects is one of the greatest mystery films ever made. When one cop says they can place him in Queens the night of the crime, Hockey replies "Really? Then they spent most of the movie convincing me I was wrong. I don't like when people say "nothing happened" in a movie (I hear people say this of Linklater's films a lot). But as the rest of the movie is so good I think most people overlook this. But who really is Keyser Söze? Well I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is Keyser Soze. Instead of audiences imagining and thinking and philosophizing we now have audiences explaining mere plot, as if that's all a film boils down to. The lines echo back as Keyzer Soze finally reveals himself before disappearing forever. Thanks. It does help that the rest of the movie is good and it gets you rooting for Spacey's character.

As for the testimony of the burn victim in hospital, and the sketch of Verbal's face: we've already established that Verbal was there, and we don't know that the burned guy was actually in a position to positively identify him as Söze. The trick isn't playing on some details that suddenly make sense but playing on your very reading of film form. He's made some of it up, altered some of it and told at least little bits of truth. Keaton seems to know the man and casually remarks, "I can't feel my legs… Keyzer" before seemingly being killed.
That's unique. I see plots to movies as the mechanism to get you from the beginning to end.
Two key aspects of the film are setting up Keyzer Soze as the ultimate boogeyman of the crime world and setting up Verbal as a pathetic and weak man who is caught up in this mess. Thanks to movies like Usual Suspects and Sixth Sense and Prestige, we've inadvertently conditioned audiences to accept only in-world plot-based explanations for films instead of considering what abstract images might represent when placed next to plot elements. People don't like to have endings open to interpretation. inception had a successful ambiguous ending imo. Verbal Kint is a very interesting character and not just because of the final twist. The first scene of a mystery film is very important as it needs to hook you immediately and make you want to know more. Though Kujan is not an active participant in the bigger story, he is a great character to put against Verbal. He explains to Kujan that a man like Keyzer Soze is only going to pop up rarely. From the very beginning, Soze is made to be a larger than life being that is unstoppable. Kevin Spacey could have told an entirely different story of what happened at the heist (I mean we literally could have watched a different movie play out**) and you can still apply the same twist because “I just made everything up” can be applied to anything. We know at least some of the events we're told happened in some form or another we just don't know if all of them did and how much of the stuff Spacey tells is what actually happened or is his version of what happened. Of course, this isn’t to say that it doesn’t matter. Let me be clear I personally have no problems with twist endings and tight plotting and misdirection. If the movie wasn't so well made this would actually be quite a "fuck you" to the audience (as it's almost reminiscent of the "it was all a dream" cliche which I think most people despise).
