A story of incomprehensible abuse delivered by an explosively violent mother of four. After watching this horrible effort of a movie, I realized that the unspeakable acts of Theresa Knorr cannot be turned into a good movie. Want to share IMDb's rating on your own site? I get that this movie is based on a true story, but the plot of the movie was sloppy as all get out. I’m referring to based on a true story + religion + mental illness. (I can not call this a movie). This movie does not even begin to come close to the book.
It says it is based on a true story but it is hard to believe that four teenagers would not fight back, particularly when one of their siblings was dying in the bathroom. Directed by Jason Stoddard.

I can't imagine myself abusing my sibling because my mom told me to but that's because I never suffered abuse at my mom's hands those boys were probably tortured and abused from such a young age that they were too terrified to disobey.

However, the acting of all the "grown-ups" in the film was disappointing to say the least. Be wary, kids – you were warned.
You know that there will be an offensive abusive mother doing horrible & abusive things to her children, except for the son who is shadowed in the background in a lot of the scenes as for his reasons as for how he acted they never really explain.He doesn't even get a line. Thank goodness I technically didn't pay for it, but it was a waste of my time. Spare the rod and spoil the child, the family must stick together, is what the cowboy preaches from Maggie's TV. There is more than the usual psychobabble herein, but do we really need phrases like personality disorder, or facile rationalisations to explain or explain away evil?
Anywho, that's my view.

They had plenty of opportunities to call the police, when the mother was asleep and particularly when the mum went to the preacher's house!? If this was the true story it seems more plausible that he had an affair with the mother and pinned the whole thing on the Mum and children?

The story is interesting enough and the cinematography is actually pretty good overall, especially considering the budget.
If you just like seeing people getting abused for the entire running time then you might just enjoy it; otherwise, if you're looking for proper plotting, character development, etc. If the book’s even better then I think I’ll stay away, enough memories have risen to the surface as it is. That's why I rate it a 4. Every review for the book says the horrors are beyond unspeakable and the film is a clunky, watered down version of these kids’ real life horror. Cinematography - overall very good, some real nice shots, most of the film is visually interesting.

It's apparently based on true events and it's painful to see how many by-standers (a low-life preacher and a school-teacher) fail to see what is really happening and let the situation deteriorate right under their noses. I just have to say this movie left me with nightmares! Don't tarnish the memories of those poor children that suffered and died by the hands of their mother by doing that. Those who think it is good in a disturbing kind of way obviously do not know the true story of Theresa Knorr. You may want to go run a hot bath before we get started – it might be needed afterward. I wish I had never watched this, and instead remembered the very well done documentary done by Cold Case Files. This is a woman who is among the worst of the worst. It contains crime scene photographs and interviews by those involved including the youngest daughter the narrator of the movie) who, by the way survived until middle-age.

Not all abused kids will become abusers but many will. Did he get investigated by police? In the formative years when one is continually abused and beaten one becomes beholding to the abuser out of terror and fear becuase the consequences is more abuse. The things that are depicted in this film are unbelievably cruel.
