One of the guests at the hotel, a handsome Englishman called Eliot, offers to take care of them - which largely means getting the hotel staff to feed them, checking up on them once a day, buying them the occasional present and otherwise letting the children run wild. A really beautiful book - and highly recommended. The story ends abruptly and unexpectedly - I turned over hoping for a neat rather than open ending.

Misfortune dogs them and the children end up staying in a dissolute French hotel while their mother is in hospital, seriously ill. I loved this. This is an elegiac description of a French summer so vivid I could smell and taste, let alone see it.
