Based on the 1976 book by author Michael Crichton (JURASSIC PARK), the screenplay was by William Wisher, Jr. (TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY) and Warren Lewis. First, the camera and editing. As some have already pointed out, the plot is quite thin (even if you have to be totally illiterate in order not to figure out this wants to be a re-interpretation of Beowulf) and has some bad inconsistencies.

From the first time I've seen this movie to this day, I just love the way this movie was filmed. I have a strange feeling that the authors wanted to make a small, average movie, with no big expectations, never-mind Michael Crichton's part in it.

I guess every region has its own legends and saga's, but I've always found the Scandinavian legends about trolls, monsters and ghosts even more intriguing and interesting as ours. Quotes

Years passed and at some point or another I popped the disc in on a whim and, for whatever reason, I felt like I was seeing a new movie. I am not a big action film lover, and really did not want to see this, but it had me at the edge of my seat and enjoying it the whole time.

That said, the story is choppy, with both a romantic and political subplot developing early on and then disappearing entirely by the end, which can likely be attributed to the tug of war between the studio, Crichton, and McTiernan.

And even though I'll admit the film is flawed on several levels, I enjoyed it very much and I'd like to encourage as much people as possible to find out more about the North men and their intriguing history. With nail biting action and mysterious drama, the film proves exciting and memorable. In particular the scene with the "fire dragon" is one of the more memorable battle sequences I have seen in any movie, and I really mean that.

FAQ Author Michael Crichton originally wrote the novel, Eaters of the Dead, in 1976 after hearing a lecture that said the legend of Beowulf was a boring story that couldn’t appeal to modern readers. In the early years of the 10th century, an exiled Arabian nobleman falls in with a band of Vikings. Apparently assorted screenplays for an adaptation of Michael Crichton's pseudo-historical novel "Eaters of the Dead" had been knocking around Hollywood for years before Crichton's name become forever associated with "Jurassic Park". It's kind of a running gag that me and my best friend will use quotes from the film during conversations or in passing. In the end, Crichton’s version of the film was what was shown to audiences, although it made little difference as the film took two years to get in front of them, at which point Disney had all but written it off, essentially dumping it without promotion.

While this film has nothing it it to make it a brilliant film it is very watchable and i would advise you to watch this if you are into war/action/adventure movies. This film makes one wonder what would have happened if, after the superb understated little gem that was "Nomads" Mctiernan had made something other than "Die Hard". The 13th Warrior is one of my favorite movies.

I even love it but it might be something to keep under consideration when you have a weak stomach and you're planning to watch this film.

The main attraction over LOTR is that it only runs 103 minutes.

Coupled with Jerry Goldsmith’s score (who replaced Greame Revell when Crichton “took over”), which I view as his last “great” one, this is a memorable slow burn of a film, which has joined the halls of my movie Valhalla forever. I would like to remind those people that 13th Warrior is set in a place where expansive scenarios don't just appear and landscapes are not necessary when the movie is based around such a small area.

Perfect timing and temperament. I was bored, mostly, and waiting for something different than what I got. Its an early version and maybe the way that Crichton had intended it at first.
