In its first years (1919-23) this IRA served as the military wing of the Dáil Éireann, the first Irish republican parliament, leading the armed struggle for an independent Ireland. After World War II the IRA spent a decade rebuilding and preparing for a guerrilla campaign against the British in Northern Ireland.
