A film was made of this novel, unsurprisingly, not so much because of the young woman Felicia, I suspect , but because of the grotesque figure of Mr Hilditch, a monster who happily meets the end he deserves. She takes off for a life on the streets, finding solace and forgiveness from God in her mere survival, while Hilditch descends further into madness. You feel for poor Felicia and as you read you desperately want her to make or not make certain decisions.
