Robert Fuerst's "The Devil's Rain" of 1975 is a rather cheesy, but at times also quite creepy little horror flick whose terrible reputation is certainly not completely justified. An added bonus, as many have already pointed out, is the all-star cast: Shatner, Borgnine and Ida Lupino (one of my favorites) all ham it up with entertaining results. Ernest Borgnine is in top form here as a satanic priest who is after a book that has the signatures of people who sold their souls to Satan. On the side of Good, we find occult expert Eddie Albert and Tom Skerritt and, initially, the latter's kinsmen Ida Lupino and William Shatner (before eventually both being taken over), as well as Claudio Brook (in a fun period flashback); apart from the aforementioned Travolta, the Evil side is represented by a cowboy hat-sporting Ernest Borgnine (when he is not decked-out in the ceremonial red cassock or a full-blown demonic goat's head!) I've seen any number of melting body scenes over the years, but the ones in The Devil's Rain are among my favorite.
And very impressive make-up Fx for the time. Ida Lupino plays his mother, Tom Skerritt his brother, and Keenan Wynn one other. Last 50 years "The Devil's Rain" is a rather decent Satanic sacrifice film. Even the grandparents used it.“Sun showers” sounds so much nicer . A B-Movie for sure to but very well executed. If you try to think too hard about what's going on with the plot, it can make your head hurt. What I liked most about this one is that it's completely unconventional: most movies of this era take a gradual build-up approach, like that seen in ROSEMARY'S BABY, where the movie begins with a depiction of normal, everyday life before gradually stripping away the layers and descending into hell. Yeah. Space Week falls at this calendar juncture because this first October week is bookended by two key dates. It is far from the best movie and not one of the top entries in the genre, but is good for what it is and is a cool little flick in my book.
