This ingenious, scruffy 1967 metafiction by Jim McBride is an exotic fruit grown in New York from the seed of the French New Wave. It seems to be a common aggravation for those who bank too heavily on these clunky old machines. Kit Carson's face has a relevancy even today, cutting through the demographic piece of the cake: he reminds one of Jean Pierre Leaud which is arguably one of the motives casting him as David Holzman, and he also reminds one of us today Beck's face, and his maybe signature lyric "I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me.". Being that this is shot on a hand held,it gives it great atmostphere (especially the shots on the street and in Central Park). with camera work by Michael Wadleigh ("Woodstock"), this experimental film has the appearance of a self-made, autobiographical documentary. This verité prediction of the mockumentary genre and modern culture's preoccupation with self-indulgent self-chronicling was right on the money, and Jim McBride's invented story of a '60s twentysomething and his obsession with cinema playfully raises some intriguing questions. An enduring delight from the Underground era. I actually feel kinda lucky to have seen it. Wildly unconventional and sadly underrated, "David Holzman's Diary" is, in my opinion, the greatest "found footage" film ever made. LRTM: Mockumentaries 2 // Docufiction, drama.
It did kick off an ongoing career in cinema, so I'd believe that despite whatever lack of success I perceive in his version of Breathless, McBride's intentions were likely honorable.
Unsurprisingly, the people around Holzman, from his easily irritated girlfriend, Penny (Eileen Dietz), to the strangers whose own lives he begins spying upon, don't appreciate his newfound obsession. It’s a purposefully uneventful and low-key premise that’s employed to exceedingly erratic effect by Jim McBride, as the director delivers a meandering drama that’s devoted almost entirely to the protagonist’s less-than-enthralling exploits – although, having said that, there are a few stretches here that are undeniably quite fascinating.
