Like it's Tigon-backed predecessor Witchfinder General, this succeeds in capturing the medieval period splendidly, and the diabolic goings on are cleverly contrasted with the pastoral setting. Good acting by a cast of British horror regulars, although none are very well known. When a skull is discovered in the middle of a field, the man that finds it goes to get help but when they return the skull has vanished. The plot is presented in a somewhat disjointed, vague manner, especially during the disappointingly incoherent, anti-climactic finale.
